The Włodzica Viaduct is a railway bridge in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship of south-western Poland. It carries the Kłodzko Główne–Wałbrzych Główny railway over the Włodzica between Świerki and Ludwikowice Kłodzkie.[1]

The bridge is part of railway line 286, the historic mountain railway linking Kłodzko Główne and Wałbrzych Główny.[2]

History

The bridge formed part of the railway through the Sudetes, a line opened in stages in 1879 and 1880 and notable for the number of engineering structures required by the mountainous terrain.[3][4]

According to the local object register, the crossing separates Świerki from Ludwikowice and carries a three-span truss structure supported on two stone piers and stone abutments.[1]

In the mid-1980s, a new carriageway for road no. 387 was built beneath the bridge, replacing the older road alignment that had followed the railway and crossed the Włodzica about 1 kilometre earlier.[1]

Description

The Włodzica Viaduct is 100 m (330 ft) long[1] It consists of three truss spans, with the girders rising above track level so that trains pass through the bridge at deck level.[1]

The bridge is one of a series of historic railway structures on line 286 in the Nowa Ruda area, although it is smaller than the major viaducts at Ludwikowice, Zdrojowisko and Woliborka.[5]
