The Ludwikowice Viaduct is a railway viaduct in Ludwikowice Kłodzkie, in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship of south-western Poland. It carries the Kłodzko Główne–Wałbrzych Główny railway across the valley of an unnamed stream, a tributary of the Włodzica.[1]

Historically, the structure was known in German as the Mölketalbrücke.[2]

History

The viaduct was built in 1878 as part of the construction of the railway through the Sudetes between Kłodzko and Wałbrzych.[1] The line required numerous bridges, viaducts and tunnels because of the mountainous terrain.[3]

Unlike several other major viaducts on the route, the bridge at Ludwikowice is described in local documentation as having retained its original form and as not having been destroyed either during the war or in post-war dismantling.[1]

Description

The viaduct is a four-span steel truss bridge carried on three stone piers.[1] The piers are set slightly out of line, so that the track crosses the structure on a gentle curve.[1] The maximum clear height is 31 m (102 ft).[1]

The official tourism page of the Gmina Nowa Ruda describes it as a double-track riveted railway bridge 164 m (538 ft) long, while the polska-org object register gives a length of 165 m (541 ft).[4][1] It is one of the major engineering structures on line 286 and is noted locally as the only double-track bridge on the route.[5]
