The Woliborka Viaduct is a railway viaduct in Nowa Ruda, in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship of south-western Poland. It carries the Kłodzko Główne–Wałbrzych Główny railway over the valley of the Woliborka stream.[1] The structure was formerly known in German as the Schwarzbachgrundviadukt and has also been referred to as the Galgenbergviadukt.[2]
The viaduct is one of the best-known engineering structures on line 286 and has been described in local documentation as the highest engineering structure on the entire Kłodzko–Wałbrzych route; at the time of its opening it was also described as the highest railway bridge in Prussia.[1]
History
The viaduct was built in 1879–1880 during construction of the railway from Kłodzko towards Nowa Ruda and Wałbrzych, then part of the Prussian railway network.[1] The line through the Sudetes required numerous tunnels, bridges and viaducts because of the mountainous topography.[3]
The route was originally planned for double-track operation. According to local historical documentation, the viaduct initially carried four single-track wrought-iron lattice girders dating from 1880. During the enlargement of the line for two-track working in 1910, the structure received four additional single-track steel lattice girders.[4]
In the 1990s, the western set of girders associated with the disused southern track was removed in order to reduce the load on the structure. Since then, rail traffic has used only the remaining track.[4]
Description
The viaduct stands between Nowa Ruda Przedmieście and Nowa Ruda and crosses the valley on a total length of 148 m (486 ft).[4] It consists of four steel truss spans carried on three red sandstone piers, with a maximum height in clear of about 35 m (115 ft).[1][5]
The bridge is built on a curve, which was regarded as a notable engineering achievement for its time.[4] In local usage it is also known as the Czarny Most ("Black Bridge").[1]
