Location

Wałbrzych Główny is a railway station in Wałbrzych, in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship of south-western Poland. Opened in 1867, it is one of the city's principal railway stations and is located at Gdyńska 6.[2][3] The station lies on railway line 274, the historic route between Wrocław and Jelenia Góra, and is also the terminus of railway line 286 from Kłodzko Główne.[5][6]

The station building is a protected historic monument listed in the heritage inventory. The National Heritage Board of Poland describes it as an eclectic brick railway building dating from 1867.[3]

History

Wałbrzych Główny was opened in 1867 during the expansion of the railway network in Silesia.[3][4] It became an important station for traffic on the mountainous route linking Wrocław with Wałbrzych and Jelenia Góra, and later also for trains running south towards the Kłodzko area.[7][8]

In 2019–2021 the historic station underwent a comprehensive modernisation as part of the Polish State Railways' station investment programme. The works restored architectural details on the brick façade, including dark-green glazed brick patterns and graphite-painted columns, and renewed the station interiors with reconstructed decorative flooring and waiting-room finishes. The surroundings were also reorganised, with new bus bays, parking spaces, bicycle stands and improved pedestrian infrastructure.[4][9]

Station building

The station building is constructed in brick and represents the eclectic architectural style typical of many 19th-century railway buildings in the region.[3] Heritage records also note associated historic railway structures at the site, including a signal box building dating from the late 19th century.[10]

Following the renovation completed in 2021, the station gained updated passenger facilities, including a waiting room, toilets, commercial space, electronic departure boards and accessibility improvements. According to the Passenger Portal of PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe, the station is partially accessible to persons with reduced mobility.[2][4]

Services

Wałbrzych Główny is served by long-distance trains of PKP Intercity and regional trains of Koleje Dolnośląskie.[11][12]

Current regional services from the station include trains towards Wrocław Główny, Jelenia Góra, Kłodzko Główne / Kłodzko Miasto, Kudowa-Zdrój, Szklarska Poręba Górna and Gryfów Śląski.[12]
