The Piekielnica (German: Höllenberger Bach) is a mountain stream in south-western Poland, in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. It is a left tributary of the Włodzica and forms part of the Oder basin.[1][2]

Municipal hydrological documentation gives the catchment area of the Piekielnica as about 13.9 km2 (5.4 sq mi).[3]

The official Polish hydronym Piekielnica appears in post-war standardization records. A 1949 official list connected the stream with the former German name Höllenberger Bach, while the 1951 register of flowing waters listed it under the standardized Polish name Piekielnica.[4][5]

Course

The Piekielnica rises on the south-western slopes of the Owl Mountains, in the area of Przełęcz Woliborska above Przygórze. Planning documents of the Town of Nowa Ruda describe the lower section of the Piekielnica valley as part of the Nowa Ruda Depression.[2]

The stream flows down through the area of Przygórze and then toward Nowa Ruda, where it joins the Włodzica as one of that river’s left-bank tributaries.[1][2]

In the urban area of Nowa Ruda, the stream is crossed by the railway viaduct at Zatorze, historically known before 1945 as Leedenbrücke.[6]

Hydrology

The Piekielnica is one of the principal left-bank tributaries of the Włodzica in the Nowa Ruda area, alongside the Jugowski Potok and Woliborka.[1]

Municipal and planning documents repeatedly identify it as a distinct mountain watercourse draining part of the south-western slopes of the Owl Mountains into the Włodzica system.[2][3]

Flood risk and maintenance

The stream has been included in state-funded river engineering and flood-damage repair works. In a 2022 parliamentary reply by the Polish Ministry of Infrastructure, works on the Piekielnica at Przygórze and in Nowa Ruda were listed among completed or planned repairs to damaged river training structures.[7]

In 2025 Wody Polskie also included the Piekielnica in procurement notices concerning post-flood river works in the Kłodzko region, including works in Przygórze.[8]
