Przełęcz Woliborska (Volpersdorfer Plänel) is a mountain pass in the Owl Mountains (Góry Sowie) of south-western Poland. It lies at an elevation of 711 m (2,333 ft) above sea level in the main ridge of the range, within the Owl Mountains Landscape Park, in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship.[1][2][3]
The pass separates the ridge of Popielak (860 m) from the massif of Szeroka (826 m).[1] It is situated about 3.3 km (2.1 mi) north-east of Wolibórz and is crossed by the road linking Nowa Ruda with Bielawa and Dzierżoniów, today designated as voivodeship road 384.[1][3]
History
Since the Middle Ages, the pass has formed part of a route leading from Bohemia and the Kłodzko Land toward Silesia.[1] In the nineteenth century, it was also associated with the transport of coal from the mines of the Nowa Ruda Coal Basin toward the textile centres on the Silesian plain.[1]
The German name Volpersdorfer Plänel is historically attested in pre-1945 guidebooks and regional publications.[4][5] The element Plänel derives from German Plan, referring to a comparatively level place on the crest used historically as a stopping or loading area.[1]
A mountain hut known as the Volpersdorfer Plänel-Baude stood at the pass in the interwar period. According to the regional PTTK description, it was built in 1932 and was destroyed after 1945.[1]
Tourism
Przełęcz Woliborska is an important trail junction in the Owl Mountains. The Main Sudetic Trail passes over the saddle, and the pass is also used by other marked hiking and cycling routes in the Nowa Ruda area.[1][6]
Today there is a tourist shelter at the pass, and it remains a recognised access point for hikes along the main ridge of the Owl Mountains.[1][2]
