The Johann-Baptista Mine material ropeway was a material ropeway for transporting bituminous coal from the Johann-Baptista Mine in Lower Silesia from Schlegel (Słupiec, Nowa Ruda) to the railway station at Mittelsteine. The installation no longer exists.
History
Initial plans for the construction of a material ropeway from the Johann-Baptista Mine to Mittelsteine station already existed in 1878.[1]
The material ropeway was in operation by 1883 at the latest.[2]
The ropeway was built by Adolf Bleichert & Co. of Leipzig.[3]
In 1902, the Owl Mountains Railway (Eulengebirgsbahn) was completed on the section from Volpersdorf to Mittelsteine.[4] The Johann-Baptista Mine received its own railway siding. In 1904, the ropeway was taken out of service.[5]
On the 1913 Messtischblatt 5465 sheet, the ropeway is no longer shown.[6]
Route
The ropeway ran from the Johann-Baptista Mine (50°32′16″N 16°34′00″E / 50.53765633982291°N 16.56676706246686°E) about 2,463 m in a south-westerly direction. In the valley between Wolfskuppe and Hermannsberg, the ropeway changed direction at the deflection point (50°31′39″N 16°32′10″E / 50.52738192405944°N 16.53599732420918°E) and then ran a further approximately 2,083 m to the west. It ended directly at Mittelsteine station next to the railway tracks (50°31′34″N 16°30′24″E / 50.52600202934787°N 16.50670196201567°E). The total length was therefore about 4,546 m.
The route of the ropeway line is shown on the 1883 Messtischblatt TK25 5465 sheet.[2] On the 1913 Messtischblatt sheet, by contrast, the ropeway is no longer recorded.[6]
