The Faculty of Sciences Dhar El Mahraz (French: Faculté des Sciences Dhar El Mahraz; FSDM) is a major Moroccan public institution of higher education and scientific research. Established in 1980, it is the oldest science faculty within the Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University (USMBA) in Fez.[1]

The faculty follows the LMD (Licence, Master, Doctorate) framework and is structured into six major departments:

  • Biology: Focusing on animal/plant biology and health sciences.
  • Chemistry: Specialized in organic, inorganic, and environmental chemistry.
  • Physics: Covering renewable energy, materials science, and nuclear physics.
  • Mathematics: Including pure mathematics and applied modeling.
  • Geology: Specialized in hydrogeology and natural resource management.
  • Informatics: Focusing on artificial intelligence and software engineering.

Research and Innovation

FSDM is a leading research hub in the Fez-Meknes region, contributing significantly to the national scientific production. It is home to the specialized Laboratory of Biotechnology, Environment, Agro-food, and Health, which collaborates on national health and environmental strategies.[2]

The institution also provides high-level expertise to the CNRST and organizes international gatherings such as the International Congress on Quality in Food Systems (ICIQFS).[3]

As a pillar of the Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University, the faculty manages a significant portion of the university's 86,000 students. It plays a critical role in the "Generation Green" strategy through its research in agricultural biotechnology and food safety.[4]
