The DVD presents Dion's concert in Quebec City, performed before 250,000 spectators on the Plains of Abraham on 22 August 2008 as part of the city's 400th‑anniversary celebrations. The release reached number one in Canada, France, and Belgium, and number two in Switzerland. In 2009, it received the Félix Award for DVD of the Year.
Concert
In June 2008, it was announced that Dion would headline a special concert on the Plains of Abraham to mark Quebec City's 400th anniversary.[1] Dion selected the guest performers for the event.[2] The lineup included Garou, Marc Dupré, Nanette Workman, Dan Bigras, Mes Aïeux, members of the Dion family, Zachary Richard, Éric Lapointe, Claude Dubois, Jean-Pierre Ferland, and Ginette Reno.[2] Dion and the invited artists performed more than 30 songs before an audience of 250,000 people.[3] An additional 100,000 spectators watched the concert on giant screens in Lévis.[4]
The show became available the following day through video‑on‑demand services offered by Vidéotron, Shaw, and Cogeco.[5] Nearly 130,000 subscribers accessed the special offer.[5] On 21 September 2008, the concert aired on TVA, attracting nearly 1.8 million viewers and becoming the most‑watched program of the evening in Quebec.[5][6]
In October 2008, it was confirmed that the concert would be released in full on DVD.[7] Céline sur les Plaines was issued in Canada on 11 November 2008.[8] The DVD contains more than three hours of concert footage, bonus material, and behind‑the‑scenes clips filmed on the day of the show, backstage, and during rehearsals.[3][7][8][9] On 20 May 2009, the DVD was released in France, Belgium, and Switzerland as Live à Québec.[10] A collector's edition including 10 autographed photographs was also issued.[10]
Commercial performance
Céline sur les Plaines debuted at number one on the Canadian Music DVD chart, selling 32,800 copies in its first week.[11][12] It became the DVD with the highest weekly sales in Canada in 2008 across all genres.[11][12] After three weeks, sales had reached 49,059 units.[5] As of June 2014, the DVD has sold over 100,000 copies and is eligible for diamond certification in Canada.[13]
Live à Québec also entered the French Music DVD chart at number one, spending three consecutive weeks at the top.[14] It sold 34,350 copies in 2009, making it the year's best‑selling music DVD by a female artist in France and the 10th best‑selling music DVD overall.[15] In 2010, it sold an additional 5,500 units, bringing total sales to 39,850 copies.[16] As of June 2014, it has sold over 45,000 copies and is eligible for triple platinum certification in France.[17]
In Wallonia (Belgium), Live à Québec debuted at number one and spent four weeks at the top of the chart. In Switzerland, it peaked at number two, and in Flanders (Belgium), it reached number 10.
