"You and I" is a song recorded by Canadian singer Celine Dion. It was released as a promotional single from her 2004 album A New Day... Live in Las Vegas.[1]
Background and release
The music video was directed by Andrew MacNaughtan in July 2004 and filmed partly at Toronto Pearson International Airport. It premiered two months later and was later included on the Ultimate Box, released in Japan in 2008. The video was nominated for the MuchMoreMusic Award at the 2005 MuchMusic Video Awards.
In October 2004, Air Canada announced that "You and I" would serve as the theme for its new advertising campaign, coinciding with the introduction of updated in-flight services and new aircraft livery. Dion also recorded a one-minute French version titled "Mes ailes à moi." Both versions were used in the airline's commercials.
The single became a radio success, topping the Canadian Adult Contemporary chart for five non-consecutive weeks in July and August 2004 and spending 34 weeks on the chart overall.[2]
On 19 June 2007, US Senator Hillary Clinton announced that "You and I" would be her campaign song in her 2008 bid for the Democratic Party nomination. The song was selected following a month-long online vote.
In October 2008, "You and I" was included on the European edition of the greatest hits album My Love: Ultimate Essential Collection.
Critical reception
Chuck Taylor of Billboard wrote that the "plucky" track was well suited for radio, describing it as reminiscent of Dion's hit "That's the Way It Is." He noted Dion's confident and relaxed vocal delivery and highlighted her characteristic melodic embellishments.
