Waikato District Council (Māori: Te Kaunihera aa Takiwaa o Waikato) is the territorial authority for the Waikato District of New Zealand.[2]

The council is led by the mayor of Waikato, who is currently Aksel Bech[3]. There are also ward councillors.[2]

Composition

Mayor Aksel Bech[4] was first elected as mayor in 2025, and prior to that first elected to the council in 2016, but failed to be elected as mayor in 2022.[5]

History

The council was established in 1989, replacing Raglan County Council (established in 1876), Waikato County Council (established in 1876), Ngāruawāhia Borough Council (established in 1920), and Huntly Borough Council (established in 1931).[12][13]
