Tanguiéta [tɑ̃ŋ.gje.ta] is a town, arrondissement and commune located in the Atakora Department of Benin.The commune covers an area of 5465 square kilometres and as of 2013 had a population of 74,675 people.[1][2] As of 2007 the town had an estimated population of 21,290.[3] It lies on the RNIE 3 highway which connects it to Natitingou.

Tanguiéta was the departmental seat of government during French colonial rule. The headquarters of the Pendjari National Park are based in the town, and the Hôpital Saint Jean de Dieu de Tanguiéta is a regionally recognized hospital. The town has internet access available.

The main languages spoken in the town include French, Dendi, Waama, Nateni, and Biali.

Geography and environment

Tanguiéta lies in the far northwest of Benin, bordering Burkina Faso to the north. [4] The relief includes parts of the Atacora mountain chain and the peneplain of the Gourma region. [5] The hydrographic network is dominated by the river Pendjari and its tributaries. [6] The climate is of the Sudan-Sahelian type, with a marked dry and rainy season. Annual rainfall is around 800-1 100 mm. [7]

History

During the French colonial era, Tanguiéta served as a regional administrative seat. [8] Historically the area saw settlement by diverse ethnic groups and was part of regional trade and transit routes. [9]

Administration

The commune of Tanguiéta is one of the nine communes that make up Atacora. [10] It comprises five arrondissements: Cotiakou, N’Dahonta, Taiakou, Tanongou and Tanguiéta. [11] The current mayor is Zakaria Boukary. [12]

Demographics

According to the 2013 census, the population stood at 74 675. [13]

Economy and infrastructure

Tanguiéta serves as a gateway to the Pendjari National Park, one of Benin’s major protected natural reserves, which contributes to tourism and conservation-linked employment in the area. [14] Agriculture, livestock rearing and trade along the RNIE 3 highway are key economic activities. [15] The town hosts the regional medical facility Hôpital Saint Jean de Dieu de Tanguiéta, established in 1970 and recognized for surgical services. [16]

Culture and languages

A variety of languages are spoken in the commune including French (official), Dendi, Waama, Nateni and Biali. [17] Traditional practices, cultural festivals and the presence of protected areas shape local heritage.
