Tori-Bossito [tɔ.ʁi.bɔ.si.to] is a town, arrondissement, and commune in the Atlantique Department of southern Benin. The commune covers an area of 263 square kilometres and as of 2002 had a population of 44,569 people.[1]
Tori is home to a constituent monarchy.[2]
Geography
Tori-Bossito is a commune and city in the Atlantique Department of southern Benin. The commune covers approximately 328 square kilometres.[3] It is bordered by the communes of Allada to the north, Ouidah to the south, Abomey-Calavi and Zè to the east, and Kpomassè to the west.[4]
Population
According to the 2013 census (RGPH-4) by INSAE, Tori-Bossito had a population of 57,632 inhabitants across the whole commune.[5] The central arrondissement (also named Tori-Bossito) accounted for 14,844 inhabitants in the same year.
Administration
The commune is divided into six arrondissements: Avamè, Azohouè-Aliho, Azohouè-Cada, Tori-Cada, Tori-Gare and Tori-Bossito.[3] The mayor, elected in 2020, is Rogatien Akouakou.
Ethnicity, Culture, and Economy
The major ethnic groups include Fon, Aïzo, Adja, and Yoruba, among others.[6] Traditional religions predominate but Christianity also has a significant presence.[6]
Agriculture remains the main economic activity—maize, pineapple, and maize being notably produced. Ananas plantations, maïs, fermes avicoles, aquacoles, exploitation de bois de chauffe sont mentionnés dans les projets communaux.
Governance
Tori-Bossito has a constituent monarchy, including the Balley central for the Egun-Gun cult.
