The Niemczańsko-Strzelińskie Hills (Polish: Wzgórza Niemczańsko-Strzelińskie) are a range of low hills in southwestern Poland. It is a geomophological mesoregion within the Sudeten Foreland.[1] The highest peak is Brzeźnica (492 m).

Geography

The Niemczańsko-Strzelińskie Hills are part of the Sudeten Foreland and lie among the following sub-ranges: to the south is the Otmuchów Depression, to the west the Owl Mountains and the Sudeten Depression, and to the northwest the Ślęża Massif.

In Kondracki's delimitation (as summarised in geomorphological work prepared for the regional geopark initiative), the northern boundary follows a subdued escarpment running approximately from Jordanów through Łagiewniki, Kondratowice and Biały Kościół to Strzelin and Jegłowa. The hills comprise several named subunits and intervening depressions, including (in the eastern part of the region) the Strzelin Hills, Lipowe Hills and Dębowe Hills, and farther south the Szklarskie Hills, Dobrzenieckie Hills and the Ziębice Plateau.[2]

Geology and geomorphology

The Niemczańsko-Strzelińskie Hills are part of the Fore-Sudeten Block at the northern margin of the Sudetes. In the area covered by the Geopark Wzgórza Niemczańsko-Strzelińskie concept, the geological setting includes several tectonic units (described from east to west as the Strzelin Massif, the Kamieniec Ząbkowicki schist belt, and the Niemcza shear zone), and the boundary with the Sudetes proper follows the Sudeten Marginal Fault.[3]

The relief of the mesoregion reflects the occurrence of mesas built of crystalline basement rocks, separated by lower areas underlain by younger sediments—characteristic of the Sudeten Foreland as a whole.[2]

The highest peak is Brzeźnica (492 m (1,614 ft)), located in the western part of the territory. The highest peak of the Strzelin Hills microregion (eastern part of the hills) is Gromnik (393 m (1,289 ft))[2] A value of 390.4 m is also reported in explanatory notes to a 1:50,000 geoenvironmental map sheet published by the Polish Geological Institute (PIG–PIB), reflecting dataset- and map-specific elevation conventions.[4]
