Negades (Greek: Νεγάδες, Aromanian: Neațiańi, Ńigădz)[2] is a settlement in Ioannina regional unit, Epirus, Greece.
Name
The toponyn is in the feminine form derived from the surname Negas where the placename was formed to indicate members of the family Nega and then the place where they settled.[3] The surname Negas is derived from the Slavic nega meaning 'joy, cheerfulness', a word where many Slavic personal names are formed and Neg/ë is also a surname used by Albanian speakers.[4] The Slavic g became γ in Greek within the toponym.[4] The suffix ades is common in Epirus and Corfu.[4]
Demographics
The village is inhabited by Greeks, and an Aromanian community which has assimilated into the local population.[2]
