Montarrón is a municipality of Spain located in the province of Guadalajara, Castile-La Mancha. As of 2004, it had a registered population of 44 (INE).

History

By the mid-19th century, the town had a population of 426 inhabitants. According to Pascual Madoz's Geographical-Statistical-Historical Dictionary of Spain (1848), Montarrón was a small municipality in the province of Guadalajara, situated on a well-ventilated hillside with a cold climate. It contained 139 houses, a town hall, a jail, a primary school for about 50 boys, a separate girls' school with 12 pupils, and a parish church dedicated to the Immaculate Conception.[2]

The surrounding territory included two springs, a hermitage, and land of moderate quality dominated by gypsum, with patches of low oak woodland. The Henares River marked the western boundary. Local roads connected the village to neighboring towns, and mail was handled through Cogolludo. The economy was primarily agricultural, producing grains, potatoes, hemp, vegetables, wine, legumes, oil, firewood, and pasture, supporting sheep, mules, and donkeys. Partridge hunting was common, and fish were caught in the Henares. Local industry consisted of agriculture and several flour mills and an oil mill, while trade involved exporting wine and some livestock and importing cereals and other needed goods.[2]
