Saint Matthew was born in the city of Vyatka (now Kirov); in 1891 he became a monk at the Monastery of St. Alexander Nevsky, and was tonsured with the name Matthew; here he practiced asceticism, obedience, and unceasing prayer, and God blessed him as a Wonderworker.
