Iqbal Hassan Mahmood (born 10 May 1950; also known as Tuku)[1] is a politician of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and a member of the national standing committee of the party. He is the incumbent Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Sirajganj-2 constituency and the incumbent minister of power, energy, and mineral resources since February 2026.[2][3]

Early life and background

Mahmood was born on 10 May 1950 into a Bengali Muslim family of Taluqdars in the village of Koyelgati in Sheyalkol Union, Sirajganj which was formerly in Pabna District, Dominion of Pakistan. His father was Abdullah al Mahmood, a politician and former minister of industries and natural resources of pakistan, in East Pakistan, and his grandfather was Derazuddin Taluqdar.[4]

Career

Mahmood served as the state minister of power in the Bangladesh Nationalist Party government from 2001 to 2006.[5] Mahmood currently serves as the minister of power, energy, and mineral resources of Bangladesh.[6]

In March 2007, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case alleging that he had amassed Tk 2.57 crore through illegal means and concealed information in his wealth statement.[7] In November 2007, a special court sentenced him to nine years' imprisonment and fined him Tk 50 lakh.[7] He appealed, and the High Court acquitted him of all charges in June 2011. However, during the Sheikh Hasina government, the ACC appealed and the Appellate Division later set aside the acquittal and ordered a fresh hearing.[8] In May 2023, the High Court upheld the conviction.[7] BNP leaders claim this was a politically motivated false conviction amid unrest.[9] After the fall of the Awami League government, in September 2025, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court acquitted him, overturning the conviction and clearing him of all charges.[10]

Controversies

On 21 February 2026, Mahmood criticized the slogan "Inquilab Zindabad", claiming it was not part of the Bangla language.[11] His remarks drew widespread criticism from politicians and student leaders, who argued the slogan was historically linked to the July Uprising, defending it as part of the nation’s political and cultural history.[12][13][14][15][16]

Personal life

Iqbal Mahmood is married to Rumana Mahmood, a former Jatiya Sangsad member. They have a son, Abed Hasan Mahmud and a daughter, Farah Hasan Mahmud. [17] Farah married a son of Awami League politician Sheikh Selim of the Sheikh family of Tungipara.[18] State Minister M. A. Muhit is Iqbal's nephew.[19] Iqbal's sister, Tasmina Mahmood, married to MA Matin who was a deputy prime minister of Bangladesh (1986–1989).[20]
