Cheetham is an electoral division of Manchester City Council which has been represented since 1838. It covers Cheetham to the north of Manchester city centre.
Overview
Cheetham ward was one of the fifteen municipal wards created in 1838[1], when the Manchester Borough Council was granted a Charter of Incorporation under the provisions of the Municipal Corporations Act 1835.[2]
Initially, the ward covered the former township of Cheetham, which had been absorbed into Manchester by the borough's Charter of Incorporation. Its original boundaries remained in place until 1919[3] when that part of the ward to the south of Elizabeth Street was transferred to the Collegiate Church ward. Further boundary revisions in 1950 and 1971 transferred more of Cheetham ward to the Collegiate Church ward.[4][5] Another revision in 1982 transferred that part of the former Collegiate Church ward north of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway to the Cheetham ward,[6] these boundaries were largely unaffected by the city-wide boundary revision of 2004.[7] At the latest revision in 2018[8], the ward's north-eastern boundary became the Bury Line of the Manchester Metrolink.
From 1838 until 1885, the ward formed part of the Manchester Parliamentary constituency. From 1885 until 1918, it was part of the Manchester North West Parliamentary constituency.[9] From 1918 until 1950, it was part of the Manchester Exchange Parliamentary constituency.[10] From 1950 until 1974, it was part of the Manchester Cheetham Constituency before being transferred to the new Manchester Central constituency until 2010. From 2010 until 2024, it was part of the Blackley and Broughton Parliamentary constituency. As of 2024, it has returned to the Manchester Central Parliamentary constituency.

- ^ The citation of this Act by this short title was authorised by section 2 of, and the First Schedule to, the Municipal Corporations (New Charters) Act 1877 (40 & 41 Vict c 69). The Municipal Corporations (New Charters) Act 1877 was repealed by the Municipal Corporations Act 1882. As to the continued use of this short title, see section 19(2) of the Interpretation Act 1978. Section 243 of the Municipal Corporations Act 1882 made provision as to the continued use of certain short titles mentioned in First Schedule to that Act. The said section 243 was repealed by the Statute Law Revision Act 1898. The Bill for the Statute Law Revision Act 1898 says the reason for the repeal of the said section 243 was: "As to s. 243 so much of the First Schedule as gives short titles not otherwise given is proposed for repeal". The Bill then says that reason for the repeal of the entries in Part II of the First Schedule to Municipal Corporations Act 1882 (which does not mention the short title of Municipal Corporations Act 1835) specified by column 2 of the Bill was "Sched. I., Pt. II. . . . as to parts in col. 2 the enactments referred to have been repealed by subsequent Acts except 40 & 41 Vict. c. 47 in Sched. I., Pt. II., which is proposed for repeal by the Bill"; and that Part I of the First Schedule (wherein the short title of the Municipal Corporations Act 1835 was mentioned) was repealed because it was "spent". As to the construction of references to the Municipal Corporations Act 1835, see sections 7(1) and 242 of, and the Ninth Schedule to, the Municipal Corporations Act 1882, and formerly section 191 of that Act (the said section 191 was repealed by the Police Act 1964).
