Caused by the death on 24 December 1896 of Alderman George Clay (Liberal Unionist, elected as an alderman by the council on 15 February 1893).[3][4]

In his place, Councillor James Wilson Southern (Liberal, St. Luke's, elected 1 November 1884; previously 1877–83)[5] was elected as an alderman by the council on 6 January 1897.[6]

In his place, Councillor James Tunstall (Conservative, Bradford, elected 2 November 1885)[9] was elected as an alderman by the council on 20 January 1897.[10]
