Myanmar will hold an indirect presidential election on a date to be announced in early April 2026, following the 2025–26 Myanmar general election. It will be the first since the 2018 Myanmar presidential election and the 2021 Myanmar coup d'état.[1]

Process

The Presidential Electoral College appoints the president, consisting of the Pyithu Hluttaw committee (elected MPs only), the Amyotha Hluttaw committee (elected MPs only), and the Tatmadaw committee (serving military personnel appointed to both houses by the commander-in-chief of Defence Services). Each committee nominates one candidate.[2] Aung Lin Dwe will preside over the election in his capacity as Speaker of the Amyotha Hluttaw.[3]

Potential candidates

Military ruler Min Aung Hlaing is expected by most analysts to be a candidate and likely winner, though he has declined to reveal his intentions publicly.[1][4]
