The Wyrębińskie Hills are a small hill range in south-western Poland, in the Central Sudetes. In regional classifications they are treated as part of the Owl Mountains in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship.[1]

The range lies in the area of Nowa Ruda and nearby villages such as Jugów, Ludwikowice Kłodzkie and Sokolec. Its highest summit is Gontowa, at 723 m above sea level.[2]

Geography

The Wyrębińskie Hills form a low upland area on the south-western side of the Owl Mountains. They belong to the Sudetic landscape of the Nowa Ruda region and are listed in official Polish topographic and geographical registers as a named physiographic unit.[3][4]

Among the better-known elevations in the area are Gontowa and Włodyka. The hills are crossed by local forest roads and tourist routes connected with the wider Owl Mountains region.[5]

Geology

The hills are built mainly of Upper Carboniferous and Permian sedimentary rocks associated with the Intra-Sudetic Basin. Geological publications of the Polish Geological Institute describe the area around Ludwikowice Kłodzkie and the south-western Owl Mountains as containing sandstones, conglomerates and claystone formations typical of the basin margin.[6][7]

History

Part of the range, especially the area of Gontowa, is associated with the Second World War underground construction programme known as Project Riese. Historical materials published by the Gross-Rosen Museum and Książ Castle note that underground workings were driven in Gontowa, known in German as Schindelberg, using forced labour from the Gross-Rosen camp system.[8][9]
