The line links the regional capital of Wrocław with the suburban and small-town belt to its south, including Bielany Wrocławskie, Kobierzyce, Sobótka, Marcinowice and Świdnica, before continuing through the valley of the Bystrzyca into the foothills of the Owl Mountains to Jedlina-Zdrój. Besides its transport function for daily regional traffic, the southern section is also important for tourism, serving destinations such as Zagórze Śląskie, Lake Bystrzyckie and the mountain areas around Jedlina-Zdrój.[2]
Historically, the line formed part of the railway network of Silesia under German administration. In the 1944 timetable, the through service was listed from Breslau Hbf to Bad Charlottenbrunn.[3] After 1945, the route became part of the Polish state railway network. In the late 20th century, however, passenger traffic declined on parts of the line and several stations and halts lost their regular service.[4]
A major change came in the 21st century with the revitalisation of the route. According to PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe, passenger trains returned to the Wrocław–Sobótka–Świdnica section in June 2022 after a break of more than twenty years. The project covered the revitalisation of line 285 and line 771, reconstruction of stations and halts, and improved accessibility for passengers. PKP PLK stated the value of the project at about 217 million złoty.[5][6]
The mountainous section between Świdnica Kraszowice and Jedlina-Zdrój was restored in a separate investment and reopened to passenger traffic in June 2023. PKP PLK described the route as one of the more scenic regional railways in Lower Silesia, with numerous curves, bridges and viaducts as well as a considerable rise in elevation between Świdnica and Jedlina-Zdrój. The reopening restored rail access to settlements in the Bystrzyca valley and strengthened regional tourism links in the Sudetes.[2]
History
The railway was developed in stages in the 19th century as part of the expanding Lower Silesian rail network. Its northern section connected Wrocław with the settlements south of the city, while the southern section followed the Bystrzyca valley toward the spa and mountain localities of the former Prussian province of Silesia. Under German administration, station names such as Breslau Hbf, Schweidnitz, Kynau and Bad Charlottenbrunn were used.[3][4]
Following the transfer of Silesia to Poland after the Second World War, the line remained in operation under Polish administration, with German place names replaced by Polish ones. For decades it served both local passenger traffic and freight movements, including industrial sidings near Wrocław and Świdnica. As on many secondary lines in Poland, usage declined toward the end of the 20th century, especially on the non-electrified regional sections away from the Wrocław urban area.[4]
Reopening and present-day use
The line regained regional importance after extensive revitalisation works in the 2020s. On the Wrocław urban section, new or renewed stopping points such as Wrocław Wojszyce and Wrocław Partynice improved access to rail transport in the southern districts of the city. Further south, the restored route re-established direct passenger links between Wrocław, Sobótka and Świdnica, and later onward to Jedlina-Zdrój.[5][2]
Today the line has a dual role. North of Świdnica it functions primarily as a regional railway for commuting and local travel within the Wrocław and Świdnica areas. South of Świdnica it also has a clear leisure and tourism function, giving access to the Ślęża Massif, the Owl Mountains, the area around Castle Grodno, and walking and cycling destinations in the Sudetes foothills.[2]
