Kanjeng Pangeran Harya Wironegoro (born Nieko Messa Yudha; 28 April 1972) is an Indonesian businessman and a senior member of the Royal Court of the Yogyakarta Sultanate. He is the husband of Princess Mangkubumi, the eldest daughter of Sultan Hamengkubuwono X and Ratu Hemas, who is also the Crown Princess of Yogyakarta.
Early life and education
Wironegoro was born in Surabaya on 28 April 1972 with the birth name Nieko Messa Yudha.[1] He was raised in Surabaya and Jakarta, attending SMA Negeri 23 Jakarta and SMA PSKD I Jakarta for his secondary education.[1] He pursued his initial higher education at the Bandung Institute of Tourism (formerly NHI), completing a Diploma (D-3) program.
He continued his studies abroad, earning a degree from the International Hotel Management Institute in Lucerne, Switzerland. He subsequently obtained a Master’s degree in Tourism Management from the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom.[2] In 2019, he completed his doctoral studies in Leadership and Policy Innovation at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta.[3]
Marriage
Wironegoro married Princess Mangkubumi (then known as GKR Pembayun) on 28 May 2002. As the bride was the Sultan's eldest daughter, the wedding was a major national event, often referred to as a Royal Wedding by the media.[4]
In accordance with palace tradition, prior to the wedding, the groom was granted the noble title Kanjeng Pangeran Harya (KPH) Wironegoro. Simultaneously, his future wife received the new name and title Gusti Kanjeng Ratu Pembayun. These titles were bestowed during a wisuda (inauguration) ceremony at the Yogyakarta Palace.[5]
The wedding followed traditional Javanese royal rites:
- Nyantri: A tradition where the groom stays within the palace grounds for a period before the ceremony to learn palace etiquette.[6]
- Panggih: The formal meeting of the bride and groom, officiated by Sultan Hamengkubuwono X and attended by high-ranking officials, including President Megawati Sukarnoputri.
- Pondongan: A unique Yogyakarta royal rite where the groom "lifts" the bride to symbolize his respect for her higher royal status. In this ceremony, Wironegoro was assisted by the Sultan's brother, GBPH Yudhaningrat.[7]
- Kirab: A grand procession around the palace walls using the sacred carriage Kanjeng Kyai Jongwiyat. This was the first time the Kirab had been performed for a royal wedding since the reign of Hamengkubuwono VIII.
The couple has two children:
- Raden Ajeng Artie Ayya Fatimasari Wironegoro
- Raden Mas Drasthya Wironegoro
Career and social activities
Wironegoro began his career as a distributor of lubricants in Jakarta. After moving to Yogyakarta, he became active in cultural and social sectors, focusing on the intersection of traditional heritage and modern management.
In 2003, he established the Yogyakarta Seni Nusantara Foundation, which pioneered the development of the Jogja National Museum (JNM). The museum, located at the former Indonesian Fine Arts Academy (ASRI) complex, serves as the first contemporary art museum in Indonesia dedicated to providing a professional platform for visual artists.[8]
Social and political roles
Within the Kraton Yogyakarta, he holds the position of Pengageng (Head) of Kridhomardowo, the department responsible for the palace's performing arts, including dance, music, and cultural performances.[9]
He has held several leadership positions in various organizations:
- Chairman of the Regional Board of the All-Indonesian Fishermen's Association (HNSI) for the Special Region of Yogyakarta. In this capacity, he has advocated for the modernization of fishing equipment and the welfare of coastal communities.[10]
- Chairman of the Edukasi Anak Nusantara Foundation, focusing on educational initiatives.
- Political involvement: He was a candidate for the People's Representative Council (DPR RI) through the Gerindra Party in the 2014 general election.[11]
Palace role
Wironegoro is active in the palace administration as Penghageng II of the Tepas Parentah Hageng. His responsibilities include managing the administration, appointments, ranks, and duties of the Abdi Dalem (palace courtiers).[12]
In addition to his administrative duties, he serves as the Head of the Kridhomardowo Department (Pengageng Kridhomardowo), which is the wing of the palace dedicated to the preservation and development of traditional Javanese arts, including music (gamelan), dance, and shadow puppetry (wayang).[13]
