WHSM-FM (101.1 MHz, "Musky 101") is a radio station licensed to serve Hayward, Wisconsin, United States. The station is owned by Civic Media.

WHSM-FM broadcasts a country music format. Its studios and transmitter are located at 16880 W. Highway 63, west of downtown Hayward.

History

WHSM-FM officially began broadcasting on July 11, 1980 [1] The station was established as a sister station to the original WHSM (now WBZH), serving as a higher-fidelity music outlet for Sawyer County. The call sign "WHSM" stands for "Hayward's Musky," reflecting the area’s famous association with musky fishing. For much of its history, the station was known as "Musky 101" and maintained a country music format that became a local fixture. The station was owned by Zoe Communications for several years, during which it functioned as a music-intensive competitor to local AC stations. In September 2024, Zoe briefly changed the format to classic hits, branding the station as "101.1 The Cabin" [2]

On September 7, 2024, WHSM-FM changed their format from country to classic hits, branded as "101.1 The Cabin".[3]

In November 2024, an agreement was reached for Civic Media to purchase WHSM-FM from Zoe Communications. Following the acquisition, Civic Media restored the heritage "Musky 101" branding and returned the station to its country music roots in early 2025.[4]

WHSM previously broadacst using HD Radio before Civic purchased the station. It was relaying sister WBZH. WHSM is no longer broadcasting using HD Radio, however the translator is still carrying programming from WBZH.[5]
