The Vadodara–Mumbai section is a railway line of Indian Railways connecting Vadodara in Gujarat with Mumbai in Maharashtra.

The Vadodara–Mumbai section is one of the most important and busiest sections of both the New Delhi–Mumbai main line and the Ahmedabad–Mumbai main line of Indian Railways. The section is operated by the Western Railway.[1]

The total length of the section is approximately 392 km. It is one of the most important and busiest rail corridors in western India.[2]

Importance

This section forms a crucial part of both the New Delhi–Mumbai main line and the Ahmedabad–Mumbai main line. It carries a very high density of passenger and freight traffic and acts as a key rail link to Mumbai.[3]

Infrastructure

The line is fully electrified with 25 kV AC overhead equipment and is primarily double-tracked.

Capacity augmentation works are in progress, including construction of third and fourth lines on various stretches to increase capacity and reduce congestion.

Kavach

The Vadodara–Mumbai section is among the routes where Kavach, the indigenous automatic train protection (ATP) system developed by Indian Railways, is being implemented in phases. Kavach helps prevent collisions by automatically applying brakes if a loco pilot fails to respond to signals or speed limits.

High-density routes on the Delhi–Mumbai and Ahmedabad–Mumbai corridors, including this section, have been prioritised for Kavach deployment.[4][5]
