Ugandhar Muni is an Indian film director who primarily works in Telugu cinema.[1] He is best known for directing the thriller films A (Ad Infinitum) (2021) and Shambhala (2025).[2][3]
Career
Debut
Ugandhar Muni made his directorial debut with the Telugu drama and thriller A (Ad Infinitum), which was released on March 5, 2021.[2] The film was produced by Geetha Minsala and starred actors Nithin Prasanna and Preethi Asrani.[2] For this film, Ugandhar Muni made a decent attempt at the thriller genre by exploring an interesting premise centered around the idea that "Science demands sacrifice".[2] However, the film received mixed critical reviews regarding its slow narration and scientific logic, though the conclusion left space for a potential sequel.[2]
Breakthrough with Shambhala
Ugandhar Muni's next directorial venture was the mystic and supernatural thriller Shambhala, which was released on December 25, 2025.[4][5] The film was jointly produced by Mahidhar Reddy and Rajasekhar Annabhemoju under the Shining Pictures banner.[4][6][7] Ugandhar Muni first conceived the core idea for the film three years prior to its release and worked tirelessly on the project for nearly two years.[4][6] He initially narrated the story to his close associate Rajasekhar, who then brought producer Mahidhar on board.[8][6]
As part of his writing process, Ugandhar Muni conducted extensive research on the environmental and geographical effects of meteor impact zones, specifically studying real-life incidents that occurred in Brazil.[6][9][8] As a director, he felt a great sense of responsibility to ensure that no audience sentiments or beliefs were offended.[6][8] To achieve this, he deliberately struck a balance between spiritual beliefs and modern science.[6][8] For example, he utilized the ancient cultural concept of pranavayu—life-sustaining air from specific trees like peepal, tulsi, and neem—to draw parallels with the modern scientific understanding of oxygen.[9][6][8]
During the film's production, Ugandhar Muni faced budget escalations after scouting Ramoji Film City, with estimates initially surging by nearly 30 percent.[6][9] However, the final budget overrun was limited to about 10 percent, with Ugandhar Muni expressing gratitude for the firm support of his producers who never compromised.[9][6][8] The film's technical aspects were handled by cinematographer Praveen K. Bangari, editor Sharvan, and music composer Sricharan Pakala, whom Muni briefed in detail about his vision from the start.[10][6][7][8] Ugandhar Muni also utilized a voiceover by veteran actor Sai Kumar to introduce the film's mythological elements.[7]
Shambhala emerged as a major commercial success, steadily improving its box office collections and achieving "House Full" theatrical showings.[4][6] Ugandhar Muni expressed his immense happiness at the overwhelming theatrical response, noting that the crowds rushing the gates reminded him of the scenes he witnessed during Chiranjeevi's film releases in his childhood.[8][9][6] The film also earned a positive reception from audiences in neighboring states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.[6][9] While some critics felt the film suffered from a sluggish and repetitive screenplay in the middle act, others commended Ugandhar Muni's disciplined storytelling and his ability to conjure a dread-inducing, 1980s atmospheric setting.[5][3]
Due to its strong reception, the filmmakers pursued a Hindi theatrical release for Shambhala scheduled for January 9, 2026, with the trailer unveiled by Kantara actor-director Rishab Shetty.[1]
Future Projects
Following this breakthrough success, Ugandhar Muni announced that his next directorial project will also fall under his favored supernatural and thriller genres.[6][9] He confirmed that this upcoming, currently untitled film will once again be produced under the Shining Pictures banner.[6][8]
