Toby Murray (born 3 November 2003) is an Australian rules footballer playing for the Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL).[2]
Early life and career
Murray has two older brothers who have played professional AFL football – Sam, who played for Collingwood, and Nick, with whom Toby would go on to play alongside at Adelaide. The Murrays are a large family, with Toby being one of four siblings.
Murray first played amateur football in his home town of Henty, New South Wales. It was here that he adopted the nickname Ibis.[1] Following an under-18s campaign in which he played with the Murray Bushrangers in the Talent League, Murray was signed to Collingwood's reserves team in the Victorian Football League (VFL) in 2022.
He played for the Wangaratta Rovers in the Ovens & Murray Football League in 2023 and was signed to Adelaide's reserves team in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) in 2024.[3]
Toby's father, Peter played with South Melbourne Reserves in 1977 and 1978 and Peter's uncle is former St. Kilda premiership player, Bob Murray.[4]
AFL career
Murray was signed to his first AFL club in 2024 when he was taken by Adelaide with pick seven in the 2024 mid-season rookie draft, reuniting with his older brother Nick.[5][6]
Prior to the 2026 season, Murray formed a ruck partnership with Lachlan McAndrew, working under the AFL's new ruck rules.[7][8] He was announced to make his AFL debut in the round one match against Collingwood.[9]
