Texila American University (TAU) is a private higher education institution established in 2010 in Guyana Located in Providence, East Bank Demerara.It operates campuses in Guyana and Zambia and offers programs in medicine, health sciences, and other academic disciplines. The university is part of the Texila American University Consortium, which manages educational initiatives in multiple countries.
TAU's programs are primarily oriented toward international students and are structured around English-language instruction. The university has developed academic partnerships with institutions in India and other regions; however, details of these affiliations vary and are subject to local regulatory approvals.
History
Texila American University was founded in 2010 in Guyana with the objective of providing medical and health sciences education to international students. The institution began with its College of Medicine and subsequently expanded its program offerings.[1] In 2017, the institution relocated to its campus in Providence, East Bank Demerara.
In subsequent years, the university launched additional operations under the umbrella of the Texila American University Consortium. In 2016, a campus was established in Lusaka, Zambia, offering programs in medicine and allied health sciences.
The Consortium has also developed educational collaborations in other countries, including India, though most of these are distance learning or partnership-based models rather than fully operational campuses.
Accreditation and Recognition
Texila American University (TAU) in Guyana is registered with the National Accreditation Council of Guyana.[2] Listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS), which allows eligible graduates to apply for certain licensing exams in some countries, subject to local regulatory requirements.[3]
The Zambia campus is regulated by the Higher Education Authority of Zambia. Each campus operates under the jurisdiction of its respective national education authority.
TAU has stated that its programs are recognized by various medical councils; however, independent confirmation of recognition by bodies such as the Medical Council of India (now the National Medical Commission) or the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) should be verified through official listings.
Its Doctor of Medicine program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine (ACCM) for the period 2023–2029.[4]
Texila American University also holds Institutional Accreditation from the British Accreditation Council (BAC) for the period 2024–2028.[5]

Curriculum overview

According to a 2025 press release from PR Newswire, eligible students may access private student loans through providers such as Sallie Mae, a major U.S.-based lender. These loans are available to qualified students to assist with tuition fees and other expenses associated with studying in Guyana.
In addition, Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) loans are available to eligible students from Ontario, Canada. OSAP is a government-funded program that helps students finance their education through grants and loans, subject to eligibility criteria. This financial aid option is specifically available for Canadian students who meet the program’s requirements.[8]
