Before serving as vice governor, Taj Yasin was a member of the Central Java Regional House of Representatives representing the United Development Party (PPP) from the Central Java II electoral district. He is the son of the prominent cleric from Rembang, Central Java, Maimun Zubair (1928–2019).[3] He is widely regarded as a representative of the religious community, particularly Nahdlatul Ulama.[4][5][6] Additionally, he serves as one of the chairmen of the Ansor Youth Movement (GP Ansor) in Central Java.[7]

Education

Yasin was educated at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Ghozaliyah Sarang (1995), Madrasah Tsanawiyah Ghozaliyah Sarang (1998), and Madrasah Aliyah Al Anwar Sarang (2001), all located in Rembang Regency.[8] He graduated from Bilad Al-Sham University in Damascus, Syria.[9]

Political career

Prior to serving as Vice Governor of Central Java, Yasin was a member of the Central Java Regional House of Representatives for the 2014–2018 term, representing the United Development Party (PPP). He served on Commission E, which oversees social welfare, education, health, sports and youth, community and women's empowerment, child protection, family planning, regional libraries and archives, as well as regional hospitals and spiritual affairs.

Vice Governor of Central Java

In the 2018 Central Java gubernatorial election, he ran as the vice-gubernatorial candidate alongside the incumbent Ganjar Pranowo. The ticket was officially nominated by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), PPP, Democrat Party, and NasDem Party, with additional support from Golkar, Hanura, Perindo, and the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI). Before partnering with Ganjar, he had previously been considered as a running mate by Ganjar's rival, Sudirman Said.[10] The Ganjar–Yasin pair won the election with 10,362,694 votes (58.78%), defeating the Sudirman Said and Ida Fauziyah ticket, which received 7,267,993 votes (41.22%). Ganjar and Yasin were officially inaugurated at the State Palace on 5 September 2018 by President Joko Widodo.[11]

In the 2024 Central Java gubernatorial election, Yasin ran again as a vice-gubernatorial candidate, this time alongside the former Central Java Regional Police Chief, Ahmad Luthfi. The pair was nominated by the KIM Plus electoral alliance, which included the National Awakening Party (PKB), Gerindra, Golkar, Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), Democrats, PPP, National Mandate Party (PAN), NasDem, and PSI.[12] They won the election with 11,390,191 votes (59.14%), defeating the Andika Perkasa and Hendrar Prihadi ticket, which was backed by PDI-P and received 7,870,084 votes (40.86%). Luthfi and Yasin were officially inaugurated for the 2025–2030 term at the State Palace on 20 February 2025 by President Prabowo Subianto.[13]
