Southwark Coroner's Court
London Inner South Coroner's Court is the Coroner's Court for inner south London. It is located at Tennis Street, London. The court covers cases for the London boroughs of Greenwich, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark.[1]
The Victorian "Purpose-Built" Movement
Before the late 19th century, inquests were often held in local pubs, vestry halls, or even the deceased's home—settings that were frequently criticized for being undignified.
1890s Construction: The Inner South Coroner's Court was part of a wave of "purpose-built" courts commissioned by the London County Council (LCC) following the Coroners Act of 1887.
The Architect: While many such courts were designed by the LCC's Architects’ Department, the building at 1 Tennis Street reflects the high-quality red-brick and stone-dressing style common in late-Victorian civic buildings. It was designed to look authoritative yet accessible, separating the legal process from the domestic or commercial world.
A Witness to London's Tragedy
This is a primary court for Southwark and Lambeth, 1 Tennis Street has handled some of the most high-profile and tragic cases in modern British history throughout the years:
- The Marchioness Disaster (1989): The inquests into the 51 people who died when the Marchioness pleasure boat collided with a dredger on the Thames were managed through this jurisdiction.
- The New Cross House Fire (1981): A pivotal moment in Black British history, the inquests for the 13 young people who died in the fire took place under the Inner South jurisdiction, highlighting the court's role in cases of intense public and political scrutiny.
Presiding Senior Coroners’
Dr. Julian Morris (2024 – Present)
- Term: Appointed April 2024.
- Background: A former solicitor and medical doctor, Morris took over the role during a period of modernisation for the Southwark-based court. He previously served as an Assistant Coroner in the same jurisdiction as well as South London Coroners, providing a smooth transition. During his recent years serving as the Senior to this jurisdiction he has handled the inquiry into the deaths of three babies Yousef Al-Kharboush, Oscar Barker, and Aviva Otte who died in 2014 after being given contaminated intravenous food. The heartbreaking inquest of Finn Kennedy, an 8-day-old baby who died following failures at a South London birth centre. The death of Lacey May Brookman (2024) which highlighted a specific clinical "blind spot" in emergency paediatrics and Natasha Hill Inquest (2026) One of the most legally complex cases currently on his docket.
Andrew Harris (2010 – 2023)
- Term: 2010 to late 2023.
- Significance: One of the most prominent coroners in modern London history. Harris oversaw the court during a period of intense public scrutiny, including the initial investigations into the London Bridge terror attacks.
- Legacy: He was known for his rigorous adherence to "Rule 43" (now PFD—Prevention of Future Deaths) reports, frequently challenging hospitals and local authorities to improve safety. Harris has presided over cases such as the Arsema Dawit (2014) A tragic case involving the stalking and murder of a 15-year-old girl. Kevin Clarke a significant "death in custody" inquest heard at the London Inner South Coroner's Court. It is often cited as a landmark case regarding the intersection of mental health, race, and police restraint. Katrina Makunova a 17-year-old girl, who died outside a block of flats in Camberwell, following a confrontation with her 21-year-old ex-boyfriend is a very tragic case that highlights failures of police safeguarding regarding domestic abuse and teenage victims.
Selena Lynch (Acting/Interim Periods)
- Term: Served intermittently in lead roles between 2005 and 2010.
- Note: While Lynch served as the Senior Coroner for South London (covering different borough groupings), she was a key judicial figure at the Tennis Street office during transition periods between permanent appointments.
Sir Montague Levine (1983 – 2004)
- Term: 1983 to 2004.
- Significance: A legendary figure in the London coronial system. Levine presided over the court for over two decades.
- Major Cases: He was the coroner responsible for the inquests into the Marchioness riverboat disaster (1989), which remains one of the most complex and high-profile cases handled at the Inner South office along with the inquest touching the death of Stephen Lawrence. His tenure defined the "Old School" Victorian dignity of the Tennis Street court.
Gordon Davies (1960s – 1982)
- Term: Approximately 1968 to 1982.
Context: Davies served during the mid-20th century transition when the coroner's office moved away from more archaic practices toward modern forensic requirements.

2. National Centre for Sickle Cell Disease
UHL is the third largest specialist centre in the UK for treating blood conditions like sickle cell and thalassaemia.
- Given the local demographics of South London, the hospital provides world-class "whole-life" care, including specialized pediatric-to-adult transition clinics and emergency pain management (vaso-occlusive crisis) protocols.
