Sodus Center, New York

Sodus Center is a hamlet in the Town of Sodus, Wayne County, New York, United States. Located approximately 4 miles (6 km) southeast of the Village of Sodus, the community developed during the early nineteenth century as an inland agricultural crossroads serving farms expanding away from the Lake Ontario shoreline.[1] The hamlet sits at an elevation of approximately 417 feet (127 m) above sea level and is centered at the intersection of Sodus Center Road (County Route 241), Barclay Road, and Main Street.[2]

Sodus Center became the site of an early Baptist congregation organized in 1810, and the Red Brick Church, constructed between 1824 and 1826, remains one of the hamlet’s most prominent historic landmarks.[3] The church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.[4]

A United States Post Office operated in Sodus Center under ZIP Code 14554 until November 25, 1995.[5]

History

Sodus Center developed during the early nineteenth century as agricultural settlement expanded inland from Lake Ontario.[1] Improved road connections between interior farms and Sodus Bay contributed to the emergence of a small crossroads community that included religious and civic institutions.[6]

A Baptist congregation was organized in 1810 under the leadership of Elder Seba Norton.[3] Construction of the Red Brick Church began in 1824, and the first meeting in the completed building was held in 1826.[3]

Sodus Center is located in the central portion of the Town of Sodus, approximately 4 miles (6 km) southeast of the Village of Sodus. The hamlet lies inland from Lake Ontario at an elevation of about 417 feet (127 m). The primary crossroads are Sodus Center Road (County Route 241), Barclay Road, and Main Street.[7]

Notable structures

  • Red Brick Church – A Federal-style Baptist meeting house built between 1824 and 1826 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.[4]
  • Baptist Rural Cemetery – An early nineteenth-century cemetery historically associated with the church.[8]

A United States Post Office served Sodus Center under ZIP Code 14554 until its permanent closure on November 25, 1995.[9]
