"Smash It Like Belushi" is a song by the American rock band Green Day, released as the first single from the deluxe edition of their 2024 album Saviors (titled Saviors (Édition de Luxe)).[1] It is one of five previously unreleased songs on the deluxe edition.[3]

Composition and lyrics

"Smash It Like Belushi" talks about mental health and isolation according to NME.[4] Stereboard critic Jon Stickler likens the track to Green Day's Dookie era of music.[5]

Release

"Smash It Like Belushi" was surprise released as the first of two singles from Saviors (Édition de Luxe), which serves as the deluxe edition of the band's 14th album.[6]

Controversy

In October 2024, Green Day released Dookie Demastered, an anniversary edition of Dookie on various non-practical formats, like a version of "When I Come Around" on a phonograph cylinder and a version of "Welcome to Paradise" on a Game Boy cartridge.[7] Belushi Speed Ball, an American metal band, took offence to this, saying to Consequence: "Here at Belushi Speed Ball Incorporated, we pride ourselves in the artisan crafting of our hand made merchandise items, ... we have busted our butts to get noticed by the masses. And in one single swoop, Green Day comes in and instantly is revered as innovative merch geniuses. Is this how getting ripped off feels?!? Is this how Municipal Waste feels!?!" They would then release a copy of their single "This Is the Peak" on a piece of dog feces.[8] Green Day would stay silent until "Smash It Like Belushi" came out in April, which Belushi Speed Ball fans and the band itself interpreted as a diss aimed at Belushi Speed Ball, despite nothing in the lyrics being explicitly about the band. On April 16, 7 days after the release of "Smash It Like Belushi", Faygoluvers.net reported that Belushi Speed Ball was headed to the studio to record a response, with Belushi Speed Ball saying: "Green Day dropped a song about Belushi, well we are hitting the studio ASAP to drop a song about the stock market! Two can play at this game, and before you all cry "Oh look who can dish it out, but not take it" That's right!"[9] MetalSucks then confirmed the title of the song and re-release of the band's prior album Stellkira, with Belushi Speed Ball bassist Vinny Castellano saying: "Stoked to give the fans something, none of them asked for... a re-release one year later of our chart topping (probably) album! Stellkira: Editioñ Extra De Luxe features alternate Warhammer 40k, Catachan, Predator inspired art by Andrei Bouzikov. In addition, there will be no skits and instead will have one extra song about the stock market." The only additional song was "It's a Green Day (You Know ... as in Stocks)". Stellkira: Editioñ Extra De Luxe was released the same day as Green Day's Saviors (Édition de Luxe).[10]
