Slunečná (German: Sonnenberg) is a mountain in the Nízký Jeseník in the eastern Czech Republic. At a height of 802 metres (2,631 ft), it is the highest peak of the Nízký Jeseník and its microregion of the Slunečná Highlands (Czech: Slunečná vrchovina).[2][3]
Geography
Slunečná lies in the territory of Dětřichov nad Bystřicí, north of Moravský Beroun.[4] The summit forms a broad, levelled and heavily forested hill; it offers only limited views and is marked by a telecommunications tower.[4]
About 1 km south-east of the summit lies the Panské louky Nature Reserve, situated on the mountain's south-eastern slope.[4][5] Marked hiking trails cross the mountain, and a cycle route also passes over the summit area.[4]
Geology
As part of the Nízký Jeseník, Slunečná belongs to an upland built predominantly of Lower Carboniferous sedimentary rocks. Nearby geological localities in the same geomorphological region expose greywackes and slates of the Horní Benešov Formation of the Nízký Jeseník Culm facies.[6]
Name
According to regional historical tradition, the mountain was earlier known by the Slavic name Rosutice; during the period of German colonisation the name Sonnenberg became established, from which the modern Czech name was later re-created by translation.[4]
