Sister Corita Bussanmas
Sister Corita Bussanmas (December 11, 1933 - March 27, 2021) was an American educator. She was a co-founder of Operation Breakthrough, a non-profit school and childcare program in Kansas City, Missouri.[1]
Life
Sr. Corita was born December 11, 1933, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Otto and Mary Bussanmas. She joined the Mount Carmel Convent in Dubuque in 1952. She joined the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1955.[1]
With Sister Berta Sailer, Bussanmas founded Operation Breakthrough in 1971.[2] Bussanmas and Sailer became foster parents in 1994, and cared for over 70 children.[1]
Honors
Sr. Corita Bussanmas received the Bank of America Neighborhood Builder Award in 2006 and theMarion and John Kreamer Award for Social Entrepreneurship in 2014. Bussanmas was inducted into the Starr Women's Hall of Fame in 2021.
