Shirley Aldebol is an American union leader and politician who represents the 13th district of the New York City Council. Her district covers much of the East Bronx.[1]
Early life
Aldebol was born in the Bronx to Puerto Rican parents.[2] She attended Cardinal Spellman High School and later graduated from Barnard College with a bachelor's degree.[3]
Career
Aldebol was the Executive Vice President of SEIU 32BJ, a New York City-based branch of Service Employees International Union representing building workers, overseeing the public schools division in the New York metropolitan area.[4][2][5]
New York City Council
Aldebol ran for New York City Council's 13th district in 2025 on the Democratic and Working Families Party ballot lines.[3] She won the Democratic primary on June 24, and went on to defeat incumbent Republican Kristy Marmorato during the general election, making the 13th district the only seat to change hands in the election.[6]
Aldebol’s campaign focused on expanding affordable housing and increasing “good jobs.” Aldebol was backed by pro-housing groups, such as Open New York, and committed to building more affordable housing in the district.[6] She assumed office on January 1, 2026.[3]
On January 15, 2026, City Council Speaker Julie Menin introduced council committee leadership assignments, and Aldebol was assigned to chair the Civil Service and Labor Committee. Additionally, Aldebol was assigned to the Aging, Consumer and Worker Protection, Finance, Hospitals, Mental Health and Addiction, Women and Gender Equity Committees.[7]
On March 3, 2026, Aldebol responded to concerns raised by constituents regarding her availability and public presence within the district. In an interview with News 12 The Bronx, Aldebol stated that she had been actively meeting with community groups and local organizations throughout the district while establishing her council office during the early months of her first term. She acknowledged that some residents had experienced difficulty reaching her office but said she was continuing to build staff and improve outreach while focusing on district priorities such as public safety, affordability, and quality-of-life issues.[8]
