Sardar Nurul Amin (সরদার নুরুল আমিন; born 1 January 1969) is a senior Bangladesh police officer. He currently serves as the chief of the Special Branch (SB) of the Bangladesh Police, a key intelligence and security agency. He was appointed to the position on 16 March 2026 as part of a major reshuffle in top police leadership following the formation of the new government.[1][2]
Prior to this appointment, Amin served as Additional Inspector General of Police (HRM) at the Bangladesh Police Headquarters. With over 30 years of service, he has held various operational, administrative, intelligence, and international peacekeeping roles. He is a recipient of the Bangladesh Police Medal (BPM) for outstanding service and has participated in three United Nations peacekeeping missions.
Early life and education
Sardar Nurul Amin was born on 1 January 1969 in Bagerhat city (then in East Pakistan). He completed his Secondary School Certificate (SSC) from Dasani School, Bagerhat, and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) from P. C. College, Bagerhat. He earned a B.Com. (Honours) and M.Com. in Marketing from the University of Dhaka, followed by an MBA.[3]
Career
Amin joined the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) Police cadre in the 15th batch in 1995 as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). He began his career in Rajshahi District as ASP and later served as Assistant Commissioner (AC) in the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
He was promoted to Superintendent of Police (SP) and served in Munshiganj, Naogaon, and Narayanganj districts. He also held the position of SP (Admin, Finance and Logistics) in the Tourist Police. Later, he served as Director (DIG rank) of the Central Police Hospital in Rajarbagh, Dhaka.
In the early 2010s, he served as Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police. In February 2010, following a student clash at Rajshahi University, he was transferred to officer on special duty (OSD) along with other officers.[4]
He has held senior positions at the Police Headquarters, including Additional Inspector General of Police (HRM/Development). As of early 2026, he was listed on the official Bangladesh Police website as Additional IGP (HRM).[5]
International peacekeeping and training
Amin has a distinguished record in United Nations peacekeeping operations:
- United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), 2002–2003
- United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), 2005–2006
- United Nations–African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), 2012–2013
He received UN Peacekeeping Medals for each mission (2003, 2006, and 2013). He has undergone advanced training both domestically and abroad, including courses in Japan (1998), the United States (2000), Kosovo (2003), Malaysia (2005), and Liberia (2006).[3]
He has served as a regular trainer at various police institutions, including the Detective Training School (CID), School of Intelligence (Special Branch), and Police Staff College, Dhaka.
Appointment as SB Chief
On 16 March 2026, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced a major reshuffle in Bangladesh Police leadership. Deputy Inspector General Md Ahsan Habib Palash (Chattogram Range) was appointed Director General of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). Additional IGP Sardar Nurul Amin was transferred from Police Headquarters to become Chief of the Special Branch (SB). Additional IGP Mosleh Uddin Ahmed was appointed Chief of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).[1][6][7]

Personal life
Sardar Nurul Amin is married to Khandaker Airin Parveen. The couple has two daughters.[3]
