Saint-Même-les-Carrières (French pronunciation: [sɛ̃ mɛm le kaʁjɛʁ], before 1962: Saint-Même)[3] is a commune in the Charente department in southwestern France.
The commune has been a centre of limestone quarrying since the Middle Ages, producing white Turonian limestone; stone from its quarries was used in the construction of the Rochefort naval arsenal in the 17th century.[4] The disused underground quarry galleries have been repurposed as ageing cellars by cognac producers, most notably Croizet, a cognac house founded in the commune in 1805.[5]
