Roy McMurtry Youth Centre (RMYC) is a provincial juvenile detention centre in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, that opened on May 28, 2009. It takes offenders between the ages 12 and 17. It was named after Roy McMurtry.[1]

Background

The RMYC is an 86-acre property.[2] It has 192 beds and is divided into six residential-style cottage units.[3] Some features include an administrative facility, two renovated buildings used as an education centre, kitchen/workshop, a chapel, and a rehabilitative centre.[4][3]

Abuse

  • A lawsuit against the Ontario government has named the Roy McMurtry Youth Centre on allegations of excessive solitary confinement.[5]
  • A teen claims to have been strip searched completely naked at RMYC four times between September 23 and September 25, 2024, in less than 48 hours in Ontario custody. He called it "horrifying".[6]
  • Some youth have claimed that racist comments have been made.[7]
  • Some youth complained of inadequate food, with excessively long gaps between meals.[2]
  • Bathroom doors have a viewing hatch, compromising privacy.[2]

Escapes and break-ins

  • On March 28, 2023, two people broke in by breaking a window hoping to extract an inmate but did not succeed.[8][9][10]
  • A 17-year-old male facing multiple charges for robbery with a firearm escaped in June 2025. Whether or not he has been caught is unknown.[11]
  • On June 24, 2012, two males escaped.[12]
