Marío Renato Varela Correa (1939–1993) was a Chilean army officer and political figure who served as Executive Vice President of the Corporación de Fomento de la Producción (CORFO) from 1980 to 1981 during the Pinochet regime.[1]

Early life and career

Varela graduated from the Escuela Militar del Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins and pursued a long career in the Chilean Army, reaching the rank of brigadier general.[2]

Before entering government office, he served for three years in management positions within the state-owned development agency CORFO.[3]

CORFO vice presidency

On 29 December 1980 he was appointed Executive Vice President of CORFO, remaining in the post until 27 March 1981, when he was succeeded by General Francisco Ramírez Migliassi.[4]

Death

Varela died in 1993 in the commune of Maipú as a result of a gunshot wound.[5]
