Rakibul Islam Rakib is a Bangladeshi student leader and politician who has served as the president of the Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chatra Dal (JCD), the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), since March 2024.[1][2] He played a significant role in supporting the 2024 Bangladesh quota reform movement, which contributed to the fall of the Awami League government.[3][4]
Political career
Rakibul Islam Rakib was appointed as the president of Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal on 1 March 2024, with Nasir Uddin Nasir as general secretary, as part of a partial committee approved by the BNP.[5] A full 260-member committee was later announced in June 2024, retaining him in the position.[6]
Role in the 2024 quota reform movement
In July 2024, during the nationwide quota reform movement (also known as the Anti-discrimination Student Movement), Chhatra Dal under Rakib's leadership formally expressed solidarity with the protesting students.[7][8] He urged students to continue the movement peacefully while announcing full support from JCD.[9]
Following the movement, which escalated into a mass uprising leading to the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina government, Chhatra Dal claimed that 49 of its leaders and activists were killed.[10][11] Rakib described the sacrifices as part of the effort to liberate the country from authoritarian rule.[12]
Recent activities
Since 2025, Rakib has been outspoken against the influence of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir, accusing them of engaging in "secret politics" and demanding transparency in their organizational committees.[13][14][15][16]
He has also led protests at Dhaka University on various issues, including against alleged misogynistic comments and for political reforms.[17] Rakib has emphasized that Chhatra Dal will not tolerate injustice and continues to advocate for democratic student politics.[18][19]
