Pokhrel is a surname of Khas people of South Asia, primarily found among high-caste Hindu communities such as Hill-Brahmin and Hill-Kshetri of Nepal, and to a lesser extent in other South Asian countries such as India and Bhutan. The Pokhrel are divided into two clans: Pani Pokhrel (Water Pokhrel) and Dudh Pokhrel (Milk Pokhrel). The Pani Pokhrel belong to the Atri clan and trace their ancestry to the sage Atri, while the Dudh Pokhrel belong to the Bharadwaja clan and trace their ancestry to the sage Bharadwaja. The Dictionary of American Family Names (Oxford University Press, 2003) identifies the surname as toponymic (derived from a place name).
