Phantom Theater: Opening Nightmare is an upcoming interactive dark ride at the amusement park Kings Island in Mason, Ohio.[1] The attraction is a reimagining and revival of the original Phantom Theater ride that operated at Kings Island from 1992 to 2002. The new version is scheduled to debut in April 2026 and will occupy the building formerly used by the park’s Boo Blasters on Boo Hill ride.[2][3]

Announcement and development

On August 28, 2025, Kings Island officially announced that Phantom Theater would return as Phantom Theater: Opening Nightmare for the 2026 season, replacing Boo Blasters on Boo Hill.[4][5] The previous ride in the building, Boo Blasters on Boo Hill, ran until September 1, 2025.[6]

The attraction is being built by manufacturer Sally Dark Rides, known for immersive dark‑ride experiences.[7]

Ride experience

According to the park’s official description,[8] Phantom Theater: Opening Nightmare will invite guests into a haunted opera‑house environment on a stormy night where a lightning strike has released supernatural “ghost notes” from the organ, scattering spirits throughout the theater. Riders board “enchanted opera boxes” and are armed with interactive “spellbound flashlights,” which they use to capture the rogue ghost notes and return them to the organ before the show begins.[9][10]

The ride is slated to include 26 interactive scenes, featuring immersive effects such as wind and sound, detailed set pieces like haunted hallways, dressing rooms, backstage chaos, a boiler room, and more. Riders will encounter a cast of animatronic characters, including returning favorites such as No Legs Larry and the Maestro.[11][12]

The experience aims to blend nostalgia, honoring the original ride’s tone and characters, with modern ride technologies, updated special effects, and interactive storytelling designed for a contemporary audience.[13]

Significance and legacy

Phantom Theater holds a place in Kings Island history as a beloved dark ride that operated from 1992 to 2002. The revival of the ride, with Phantom Theater: Opening Nightmare, represents the park’s effort to honor its legacy while modernizing the experience for a new generation. [14]
