Pades (Greek: Πάδες, Aromanian: Pădz)[2] is a settlement in Ioannina regional unit, Epirus, Greece. The village located in a ravine on the right side of the river Vjosa.[2]
Name
The placename comes from the Greek Epirot preposition padi meaning the 'flat and smooth surface in the middle of the slope' stemming from the Slavic term padъ with the same meaning and not directly from the Slavic preposition of the term, as the toponym is etymologised by linguist Max Vasmer.[2] In Aromanian the term is a loanword where the noun is păde meaning 'the flat place' and the adjective pade 'below, low'.[2] The Aromanian form of the toponym is from the plural pădz of the above Aromanian word.[2]
Demographics
Pades has an Aromanian population and is an Aromanian speaking village.[3][4]
