Opontia is an e-commerce company founded in February 2021 by Philip Johnston and Manfred Meyer.[1][2]

History

Opontia was co-founded by Manfred Meyer, who previously held executive roles at Next Commerce, Digikala, and Lazada.[3]

In June 2021, Opontia raised US$20 million in seed round from Global Founders Capital, Presight Capital, Raed Ventures and Kingsway Capital.[4] Angel investors also participated in the round such as Tushar Ahluwalia, who is the CEO of Razor Group, Jonathan Doerr, the former CEO of Daraz and co‑founder of Jumia, and Hosam Arab, the CEO of Tabby and former CEO of Namshi.[5]

Opontia acquires e‑commerce brands that are already profitable and plans to invest the seed funding to develop and grow them. The startup also has plans to expand into additional cities such as Cairo, Istanbul, and Lagos.[5]

In July 2021, Opontia acquired Novimed, a UAE company that produces consumer medical products.[6]

In August 2021, Opontia opened a new office in Turkey, then another office in October 2021 in Poland.[7][8][9]

In December 2021, Opontia raised US$42 million in equity and venture debt in a series A round,[10] In 2021, the company was ranked 12th in Forbes Middle East's 50 Most-Funded Startups list.[11]

Opontia acquires and operates e-commerce brands in the CEEMEA (Central & Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa). The compony raise venture debt financing 2021.[12]

By the end of 2021, the company reported agreements with 15 e-commerce brands.[13]
