Nungou Yumthangba (ꯅꯨꯉꯧ ꯌꯨꯝꯊꯪꯕ) or Nungngou Yumthangba (ꯅꯨꯡꯉꯧ ꯌꯨꯝꯊꯪꯕ) was the founder of the Chenglei (Sarang Leishangthem) clan of the Meitei confederacy.[1][2]

Family

Nungou Yumthangba was a son of Tharang and Huimu Leima. His brothers were Lamlekshang (Hao Oiba) and Thengkoipa (Lokpa).[3] According to the Chengleiron, Nungou Yumthangba had one more brother called Lokton Atonba.[2]

Founding lineages of the Chenglei clan

Among the four brothers, Nungou Yumthangba is recognized as the originator of the primary branch of the Chenglei (Sarang Leishangthem) clan.[4][2]

According to the Leithak Leikharol[5], Pudin, and Leishangthemlon, Nungou Yumthangba's older brother, Lamlekshang, relocated to the hills and made his home there.[6][2] His lineage eventually evolved into the Songbu Kabui tribes, who currently reside in the southwestern hills of present-day Manipur.[2]

Thengkoiba (Lokpa) started the Haorok-Konthou lineage.[7]
