Nowa Ruda Zdrojowisko station
Nowa Ruda Zdrojowisko is a historic spa hamlet and present-day urban locality in Nowa Ruda, Kłodzko County, Lower Silesian Voivodeship, in south-western Poland. It lies in the Central Sudetes at about 452 m above sea level. Historically known in German as Centnerbrunn, the locality developed in the nineteenth century as a small health resort based on a mineral spring and later functioned as a climatic summer resort.[1]
Location and status
Zdrojowisko forms part of the urban area of Nowa Ruda. Official electoral and municipal materials list Zdrojowisko as a street and inhabited part of the city within the administrative area of Nowa Ruda. The locality is situated on the southern side of the town, in the valley of the Jugowski Potok stream, on routes leading toward the Owl Mountains.[2]
History
The settlement emerged as a spa in 1836 on the initiative of Dr. C. Niedenfuhr. Its development was linked to what was described as the only bicarbonate–sulfate–sodium acidulous mineral spring in the Sudetes. In the second half of the nineteenth century a spa house, villas for guests, and an extensive park were established, giving the locality the character of a small resort.[1]
Around 1900, mining activity in the Nowa Ruda area caused the springs to weaken and gradually disappear. Even after the decline of balneological treatment, Zdrojowisko continued to function as a climatic station and summer resort. Municipal tourism materials state that this resort phase lasted until 1939, while regional heritage material notes that leisure and health functions continued until 1945, with amenities such as a swimming pool and an amphitheatre.[3][1]
After the Second World War, the former spa house was adapted for educational use and housed a secondary school complex. After the school ceased operating there, the building was left vacant.[1]
Transport
Zdrojowisko is served by the Nowa Ruda Zdrojowisko railway stop on the Wałbrzych–Kłodzko line. Regional heritage material dates the opening of the stop to 1896, associating it with the needs of the resort. Current railway information from PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe lists the stop at coordinates 50.6117267 N, 16.5103861 E and notes that trains stop there on request.[1][4]
A notable structure in the locality is the railway viaduct over the Jugowski Potok valley. According to Kłodzko County materials, the bridge is 148.4 metres long, carries the track about 30 metres above the valley floor, and consists of brick or stone piers with steel truss spans. One of the southern tracks was removed in the twentieth century.[5]
Character and legacy
Although Zdrojowisko no longer functions as a spa, it preserves the memory of one of the lesser-known historic resort sites of the Sudetes. The surviving built environment, the former spa area, and the railway infrastructure reflect the locality's nineteenth- and early twentieth-century role as a health and leisure destination on the edge of Nowa Ruda.[3]
