Nirmal Kumar Dhara is an Indian politician and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. In May 2021, he was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Indas constituency in West Bengal.[1] He defeated Runu Mete of the All India Trinamool Congress by a margin of 7,220 votes in the 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election.
Early life and education
Dhara hails from the Bankura district of West Bengal. He is highly educated, holding a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in English from Burdwan University. Before entering politics, he worked as a private tutor to earn his livelihood.[2]
Recognition as India's poorest MLA
Dhara gained national attention for his extreme simplicity and humble financial background. According to his election affidavit and reports by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), he was identified as the poorest MLA in India.[3]
At the time of his election in 2021, his total declared assets were worth only ₹1,700. He does not own any bank account, immovable property, personal insurance, or vehicles.[4] His lifestyle and dedication to public service despite limited means have been widely appreciated in Indian media.
