Nila Ibrahimi

Nila Ibrahimi (Dari/Hazaragi: نیلا ابراهیمی; born 2006) is an ethnic Hazara teen activist from Afghanistan who advocates for the rights of Afghan girls and women.[1]

In March 2021, after Afghanistan’s Ministry of Education banned girls over the age of 12 from singing publicly, the Afghanistan National Institute of Music launched the #IAmMySong campaign in protest of the decision. The campaign invited musicians and supporters to record and share songs online in solidarity with Afghan girls and women. Ibrahimi participated by publishing a video of herself singing, which gained viral attention.[2]

After the Taliban retook control of the country on August 15, she and her family fled to Pakistan and then to Canada, where she graduated from West Point Grey Academy.[3] While in Pakistan, Ibrahimi worked with the 30 Birds Foundation to raise money to evacuate 200 Marefat High School girls out of Afghanistan.[2]

In Canada, Ibrahimi and her brother founded Her Story, an organization which aims to share the stories of Afghan girls and raise awareness of the issues facing them.[2]

On November 19, 2024, she won the International Children’s Peace Prize.[4]
