The National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources is a research organization established in December 1983[1] in a rented building in Ahmedabad under the aegis of Indian Council of Agricultural Research to undertake research related to the conservation of fish germplasm resources of the country. It is also dedicated to the preservation and study of fish genetic resources.[2]

In 199, it moved to the 52-acre new premises at Canal Ring Road, Telibag, Dilkusha, Lucknow.[3][4] They work to identify, document, and conserve the genetic diversity of fish species, which is important for maintaining healthy and sustainable fish populations. Their research helps support the development of policies and practices for sustainable aquaculture and fishing, as well as for conserving important fish species for future generations.

In December 2022, a book, "A road map from cataloging to assessment and conservation of fish genetic resources", was released by the then UK Sarkar at the anniversary function.[5] On 27 and 28 February 2026, Tarachand Kumawat, scientist at ICAR-NBFGR, Lucknow, took a session on strengthening market linkages between farmers and consumers and spreading awareness about welfare schemes at Aquaculture & Biodiversity Centre, Department of Zoology, Gauhati University.[6]

In May 2025, a team of researchers from NBGGR and Gauhati University, Lady Keane College in Shillong, discovered a new species of cave-dwelling fish in Meghalaya’s Mawsynram town.[7]
